Welcome To The Friendly Skies of Al Qaeda

Think we’re kidding? We’re not.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) recently revealed a new magazine that was started for jihadis. It’s name? Al-Qaeda Airlines. It’s purpose? Below are some hints to spur the imagination.

As George Orwell once said: "We have now sunk to a depth at which restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men."

So let us restate the obvious, i.e., this magazine, its founders, its intended audience, and its ideology are all Islamic.

Which leads us to re-ask the obvious, i.e., what is it about Islam that causes so many of its followers to murder, maim and destroy (or seek to so do) in its name?

On May 15, 2012, an online jihadi known as "'Abdallah Dhu Al-Bajadin" published the second issue of "Al-Qaeda Airlines magazine." The stated purpose of the 206-page PDF file, compiled in magazine format from various internet sources, is to provide jihadis with an analysis of past terror operations, along with guides on how to manufacture explosives. As in the previous issue, the current one was posted in a subsection of the jihadi forum Shumoukh Al-Islam dedicated to military topics.

In the current issue of the magazine, titled "Al-Qaeda's Hallmarks," Dhu Al-Bajadin summarizes and analyzes Al-Qaeda's ten major bombing attacks over the last decade, in an effort to learn lessons from both the successes and mistakes of the mujahideen who planned and carried them out. The magazine's content is compiled mostly from descriptions and illustrations of the attacks taken from sources such as Wikipedia and Western press outlets.

Other sources include texts from jihadi publications, such as AQAP's English-language Inspire magazine, AQAP communiques, jihadi forum posts, explosive-manufacturing manuals and so on. The PDF file was posted along with short video clips documenting the attacks discussed in the magazine and presenting methods for manufacturing explosives.
