ABOUT THE SPEAKER
After a 36-year career in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Major General Yaacov Amidror retired from active military service in 2002 as Commander of both the IDF Staff & Command College and the National Defense College. Prior to that General Amidror served as head of IDF Military Intelligence/Analysis Division, responsible for preparing the National Intelligence Assessment. Previous positions include Military Secretary to the Minister of Defense; Intelligence Officer for the Northern Command; and head of a large-scale technology project for the IDF Intelligence Corps. During his long military career, General Amidror gained extensive knowledge and experience in strategic planning, Intelligence and foreign policy, particularly with respect to the Middle East.
Upon retiring from the military, General Amidror served as Senior Research Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, in Washington, DC. His publications include "The Geneva Accord: A Strategic Assessment" (December 2003); "Israel's Strategy after the Iraq War" (April 2003); "Israel's Strategy in Curbing Palestinian Violence" (December 2002); "Reflections on Army and Security"; and "Intelligence: Theory and Practice" (March 2006).
General Amidror currently serves as Vice President of the Lander Institute, an academic center in Jerusalem, as well as Program Director of the Institute for Contemporary Affairs, a project of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. He is also an advisor to various government agencies on matters relating to Intelligence, strategic planning, defense, and homeland security; a member of the Boards of Directors of numerous large Israeli companies and hi-tech start-ups; a respected military and policy analyst, appearing regularly in the Israeli media; and a frequent contributor of articles to major Israeli and international newspapers and publications.
