ABOUT THE SPEAKER
For twelve years, Dr. Assad Homayoun served as Minister in charge of political affairs at the Iranian Embassy in Washington, D.C, up until the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the overthrow of the Shah. During his years of diplomatic service, Dr. Homayoun participated in many high level negotiations in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East, and liaised with the U.S. Government, the White House, Congress and other governmental agencies. Following the Revolution, he remained in Washington, D.C., where he earned his PhD in International Relations at George Washington University, and then served as a lecturing Professor there for six years, as well as a consultant to BDM Corporation.
Just before the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, Dr. Homayoun - with sponsorship from the U.N. Security Council - coordinated and published a statement in The Washington Times, signed by one hundred retired U.S. Generals and Admirals, assessing the geopolitical situation in the Persian Gulf and alerting to the over-militarization of Saddam Hussein, and the continuing danger of the clergy regime in Iran. He has provided advice and counsel to many opposition groups in exile, and helped organize the Azadegan movement (a movement for the liberation and freedom of the Iranian people), headed by the late General Dr. Bahram Aryana, who mounted a campaign to topple the fundamentalist regime in Iran, but died in exile.
Dr. Homayoun is currently President of the Azadegan Foundation, as well as a Senior Fellow at the International Strategic Studies Association. He has served as editor of the publication Focus on Iran, and has written numerous articles for publications such as The Washington Times, The Washington Post, The New York Times, World Tribune.com, Defense and Foreign Affairs Magazine, Strategic Policy, Global Affairs and many others.
