ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Shmuel Bar retired from public service in 2003 after serving for 30 years in Israel's Intelligence services, and holding various diplomatic posts in Europe. During that period Dr. Bar filled senior staff and operational positions, dealing with matters relating to radical Islam, terrorism, Iran, Syria, inter-Arab politics, Asia, and Africa.

Upon retiring from public service, Dr. Bar became Director of Studies at The Institute of Policy and Strategy in Herzliya, Israel, and has published numerous books and papers on radical Islam, terrorism, and Middle Eastern affairs, including Iranian Defense Doctrine and Decision Making Mechanism Iran: Cultural Values, Self images and Negotiation Behavior and more. His most recent book - Warrant for Terror: the Fatwas of Radical Islam and the Duty of Jihad - has been hailed by the experts as "one of the most important and compelling books in recent years", "an absolutely brilliant page-turning analysis of the dynamics underlying radical Jihad today" and "a bench mark in the literature on Jihad" (Steven Emerson, Terrorism Expert & Director of The Investigative Project on Terrorism), and by print media as "a must-read for anyone disturbed by the government and media's failure to truly elucidate the underpinnings of the terrorism threat that's here to stay" (The Miami Herald).

Dr. Bar regularly advises Israel’s National Security Council and has headed several projects and studies on Iranian defense doctrine, decision-making and negotiation tactics; the Syrian regime; etc. He speaks 6 languages - Hebrew, English, Arabic, French, Spanish, German and Dutch - and is a noted expert on Iran and radical Islamic ideologies. He appears frequently on Israeli and international television and radio shows, as well as in national and international publications, e.g., The International Herald Tribune, The New York Times, Die Zeit (Germany), The Daily Star (Lebanon), De Telegraaf (Netherlands), La Libre (Belgium) Jerusalem Post and many others. Dr. Bar is also founder of IntuView Ltd., an Israeli start-up company developing an artificial intuition system for use by military and security organizations in document exploitation of texts relevant to radical Islam and terrorism, in Islamic languages.
